Plan for the Triple Jump

SAFETY TIPS
- Be sure your sand landing pit and triple jump runway are clear of debris.
- Before jumping, the pit should be turned-over with a shovel to the depth of at least one shovelhead. After being turned-over, the entire landing pit should be raked smooth and level
- [During class long jumping activities, keep shovels, rakes, brooms and measuring tapes, out of the landing pit and away from the immediate surrounding area. Be sure any sand is swept from the runway take-off area before each jump.
- After each jump, stand in front of the takeoff board until the landing area is clear and groomed for the next jumper to begin the approach run.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
Shovel Rake(s)
Tape Measure
12 traffic cones

CLASS ACTIVITIES

On a grass field, set up 3-rows of 4 cones, 5-foot apart. Divide the class into three equal single file lines standing at the first cone in each row. Instruct the first student in each line to do the following jumping drills covering the distance between the cones: (2.22aL2Q@Ltiv@m @ in each drill)

#I- Double-Arm/Double-Log Hop Drill: Standing with both feet together, shoulder width apart... bend the knees, bring both arms back, smno both arms forwa and jump to the next cone, land on both feet and jump again to the next cone. Stop the arms swinging forward when they reach shoulder-height. This is called blocking.

#2- Double-Arm/Single-Log Hop Drill: Standing on one foot, repeat the previous drill jumping and landing from the same foot. Repeat the drill on the other foot.

#3- Standing Hop-Step-Jump Drill: Standing on your non-kicking foot, bring both arms back and swing them forward as you HOP onto the same foot...immediately upon landing, STEP or stride forward onto the other foot... then IJUMP and land on both feet.

#4- Jogging Triple Jump Drill: Practice the entire triple jump sequence on the grass with a jogging 3-4-stride run up.

After performing these drills, move to the triple jump runway and have students practice the triple jump with a longer, faster running approach into the sand pit.
