Coach,
My daughter runs a 57.50 in the open 400m and splits 55.00 (twice) in the 4x400. How can I get her to run that 55.00 in the open 400m?
Thanks,
Lucius

Lucius:
These are very impressive times.
If your daughter is running in the lead in the open 400m, it means she is not being challenged so, therefore, she is not going to work harder. Also, if she is behind in the race but catches up right away, then she is still not being challenged throughout the race. In other words, if she is running just fast enough to beat the competition, then she has a lot of room for improvement.
However, if she is being challenged during the race and is working at catching-up throughout the race, then you can't expect too much because she is already being challenged and her improvement will be minimal. The more she runs races, the more she will improve. Talented athletes will improve their times by running with athletes that match your daughter's time or by running with athletes that are faster.
In addition, she has to run tactical and have race strategies. The race has to be broken down into four parts. She will make improvements by running her strategies in each of the four parts. If she is running just to run and only on shear talent, she is running on random chance. She should break the race down by knowing where she should be in each phase of the race. Sometimes she may have to make adjustments depending on the competition.
