Clinic notes presented by Michael H. Stone who is an internationally known expert in resistance training.
Overwork:
An important goal of periodization is the avoidance of overwork. Overwork can be considered a maladaptation to training (and non training stressors) which result in a plateau or decremental in performance. Overwork can be accompanied by a variety of signs and symptoms. These signs and symptoms can be divided into two types, those that minic stimulation of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system. It is interesting to note that some evidence suggests that anaerobic athletes are more likely to develop sympathetic symptoms of overwork and aerobic athletes are more likely to develop parasympathetic symptoms of overwork. Recovery from overwork can require a substantial amount of time ranging from a few weeks to several months.
Overreaching:
Overreaching may be conceptualized as a brief planned short term phase in which training volume and\or intensity is increased. Overreaching may result in a short term decrement in performance. The signs and symptoms of overreaching are not typically as severe or extensive as those noted with true overtraining. Restoration or performance can occur in a few days to a few weeks. Often there is a delayed increase in performance 2-5 weeks after the overreaching phase.
More notes forthcoming.
