Coach,
We are setting up a team for the 4x400m relay. In what order should the athletes runs? How much time benefit can we expect with handing over the baton? Do you have any more things we should know or tips?
thanks in advance and keep up the good work,
Eric

That is generally a coaches feel as far as the order is concerned, what I personally do is have of one my strongest legs, if not the strongest start off. They can go out and set the table and give us a good positive start, usually we are first going into the first exchange. Since outdoors I am speaking of right now, there is a 3 lane stagger before you can cut in, you want to be first to break in, to control the pole and pace of the race. I put as my second leg, someone who can go out and keep that same strong pace that was just gathered, maintain or stretch out the lead.
For my third leg, I want someone to maintain, someone who can go out and run, but also who can kick if need be. For my anchor leg, they must be a beast, the heart of a lion, maybe not my fastest leg, but certainly my toughest, could be fastest as long as they are also the toughest. Should be able to run any style, go out hard, pick it up at any point in the race, and finish strong. Hope this helps you!
