The goal of running mechanics is to achieve efficient, balanced movement of the body's parts during running. Here are some drills:

Work on keeping the torso erect. There is very little forward lean, except during acceleration. Keep your athlete running tall, with the hips forward.

The foot should touch down directly under the torso. The position of the foot as it touches down varies widely among runners. The runner should try to avoid an exaggerated reach with the foot, which may cause over striding and a braking action.

Keep your runner using less knee lift and recovery-leg kick than sprinters. Use little knee lift, keeping the foot close to the ground at all phases of the stride, using a shuffling motion.

The arms are used for balance and to transfer momentum, as in accelerating or running up a hill. The arms are carried at about a 90-degree angle, swing freely from the shoulders.

The position of the head should be relatively level. The runner should look about 20m to 30m ahead.
