Clinic notes presented by National Strength and Conditioning Association. "Different Types of Overtraining" by Michael H. Stone who is an internationally known expert in resistance training.
Dr. Stone discussed different types of overtraining:
Overtraining can be divided into different categories. One type of overtraining has been termed "monotonous training". This type of overtraining can occur as a result of too little variation in mechanics (i.e. exercise selection). There may be a plateau or loss of performance due to consistent, unvarying use of the same exercise performed in the same manner and not because of overwork or excessive fatigue. This type of overtraining has been described among teenage weightlifters by Hakkinen et al. in 1981 and may be similar to a batting slump observed among baseball players. Speculation suggests that monotonous overtraining is due to the adaptation of the nervous system to the lack of variation in exercise selection and in the training routine. Thus, chronic use of the same exercises and movement patterns does not allow for a movement overload. This type of overtraining can be corrected by variation in exercise selection. Overwork can be divided into two types:
1. overreaching and
2. overwork
