What are the definitions used in resistance training?

Clinic notes presented by National Strength and Conditioning Association. "The Concept of Periodization" by Michael H. Stone Ph.D. who is an internationally known expert in resistance training.

Dr. Stone discussed definitions. These definitions are:

1.
Resistance Training: a general term describing modes allowing the application of resistance to muscular contraction.

2.
Mode: the device used in resistance training.

3.
Method: the structure of the training program.

4.
Exercise Intensity: the power output of a movement.

5.
Training Intensity: the rate at which training proceeds, typically estimated by the average mass lifted. Relative intensity refers to a percentage of the 1RM.

6.
Training Volume: the amount of work (F x Dv) performed. Work is estimated as the volume load or by total repetitions.

7.
Volume Load: repetitions X mass lifted. Volume load gives a better estimate of training volume and work performed than does repetitions.

Free Weight: applies resistance by use of a freely moving body. Includes barbells, dumbbells, associated benches, racks, medicine balls, throwing implements and body mass.

Machine: applies resistance in a guided or restricted manner. Includes plate loaded and selectorizor devices, electronically braked devices, springs and rubber band devices.

More notes forthcoming.
