I am running cross country for the first time and I heard that it reduces your speed. What can I do to keep my speed through the cross country season and into the indoor season?

Your best bet to maintain speed is to add some fast running at the end of every day. After a continuous run, run 8-10 fast strides (80-100m each) each one getting a little faster. This will get your legs used to moving fast without accumulating a bunch of lactic acid. Also, it will get your body used to running fast at the end of your workout and help you with your kick at the end of the race.
