I coach a high school girls' track team. There is a girl on the team that throws 32 feet during practice but can't throw past 29 feet in a meet.
Any suggestions?

The first recommendation is to take a video of the athlete during practice and during a meet so you can do a comparison in technique. Another recommendation is to have a Shot Put Technique Check List for reviewing movement quality in the positions. While watching the video, have your Shot Put Technique Check List to work with.
The positions are:
1.
Preliminary Position
2.
Glide
3.
Power Position
4.
Transition
5.
Push Off/Delivery
6.
Follow-After
Each position has several body movements. The check list will provide many of the points to look for when checking the thrower’s technique.
Refer to two articles in the web site by Don Babbitt under the Throws section. One article is “Coaching Shot Put for Beginner Throwers Part I” and the second article is “Teaching Progressions for Beginning Shot Put Part II”. Use these articles for making a check list. There are other outstanding articles in which technique is broken down.
