Track Athlete Problem

I have a talented track athlete that goes through his strength training workouts half heartedly. His strength is mediocre(weak link). I am certain weight training would make a difference. How do I approach this athlete to motivate him to commit to work harder in the weight room?
Thanks.

It is frustrating for a coach to have an athlete with talent that will not excel in his sport because of attitude, inconsistency, immaturity and other reasons or excuses. There is always a reason for the behavior. Try to find the root of the problem so that it is resolved.

Decide how much time you are willing to invest in a particular athlete. Sometimes we turn them around and sometimes they go their own way. Coaches see it year after year. The important thing is to communicate with the athlete to explain how the other training will benefit him. Once he sees the improvements and results he will be motivated.
